It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-68184 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68184/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68184/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-68184","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68184/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-68184","record":{"aliases":["BELL-CVE-2026-68184","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-68184","GHSA-j56f-w52c-9vh2","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-68184"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["data_read","denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A local attacker with access to CD-ROM devices can trigger a stack out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel, potentially leaking memory or causing a crash.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":null,"severity":null,"source":null,"vector":null,"version":null},"cwes":[],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\ncdrom: fix stack out-of-bounds read in CDROMVOLCTRL\n\nmmc_ioctl_cdrom_volume() first reads the audio control mode page into a\n32-byte stack buffer with cgc-\u003ebuflen set to 24.  If the device reports a\nblock descriptor, the function increases cgc-\u003ebuflen to include that\ndescriptor and reads the page again.\n\nFor CDROMVOLCTRL, the function then builds a MODE SELECT parameter list\nby moving cgc-\u003ebuffer forward by offset - 8 bytes.  This drops the block\ndescriptor from the outgoing payload and leaves a new 8-byte mode\nparameter header in front of the audio control page.  However, cgc-\u003ebuflen\nis left unchanged.\n\nWith a standard 8-byte block descriptor, cgc-\u003ebuffer points at buffer + 8\nbut cgc-\u003ebuflen remains 32.  cdrom_mode_select() therefore asks the low\nlevel packet path to write 32 bytes from that adjusted pointer, reading 8\nbytes past the end of the 32-byte stack buffer.\n\nThis is not hit by CDROMVOLREAD, and CDROMVOLCTRL only triggers it on\ndrives that return a non-zero block descriptor length, which helps explain\nwhy it has gone unnoticed.  The overread is also sent to the device as\nextra MODE SELECT payload, so it may not produce an obvious local failure.\n\nReduce cgc-\u003ebuflen by the same amount as the buffer pointer adjustment so\nthe MODE SELECT transfer covers only the intended parameter list.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"cdrom: fix stack out-of-bounds read in CDROMVOLCTRL","id":"CVE-2026-68184","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":8,"next":{"headline":"LoongArch: Move jump_label_init() before parse_early_param()","id":"CVE-2026-68185"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"firmware: stratix10-svc: fix memory leaks and list corruption bugs","id":"CVE-2026-68183"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-08-10","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-08-19","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A local attacker with access to CD-ROM devices can trigger a stack out-of-bounds read in the Linux kernel, potentially leaking memory or causing a crash.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-68184/"}
