It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-72135 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-72135/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-72135/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-72135","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-72135/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-72135","record":{"aliases":["BELL-CVE-2026-72135","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-72135","GHSA-mgw8-pg67-5pw5","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-72135"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["data_read","data_modify"],"network_reachable":"adjacent_or_local","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel TPM driver","requires_auth":"low_privilege","summary":"A local attacker can trigger out-of-bounds heap reads and writes in the Linux kernel TPM driver via positional I/O, potentially leaking memory or corrupting data.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":7.8,"severity":"high","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\ntpm: Make the TPM character devices non-seekable\n\nThe TPM character devices expose a sequential command/response\ninterface, but their open handlers leave FMODE_PREAD and FMODE_PWRITE\nenabled.\n\nAfter a command leaves a response pending, pread(fd, buf, 16, 0x1400)\npasses 0x1400 as *off to tpm_common_read(). The transfer length is\nbounded by response_length, but the offset is used unchecked when\nforming data_buffer + *off. A sufficiently large offset therefore causes\nan out-of-bounds heap read through copy_to_user() and, if the copy\nsucceeds, an out-of-bounds zero-write through the following memset().\n\nPositional I/O does not provide coherent semantics for this interface.\nAn arbitrary pread offset cannot represent how much of a response has\nbeen consumed sequentially. The write callback always stores a command\nat the start of data_buffer, while pwrite() does not update file-\u003ef_pos\nand can leave the sequential read cursor stale.\n\nCall nonseekable_open() from both open handlers. This removes\nFMODE_PREAD and FMODE_PWRITE, causing positional reads and writes to\nfail with -ESPIPE before reaching the TPM callbacks, and explicitly\nmarks the files non-seekable. Normal read() and write() continue to use\nthe existing sequential f_pos cursor, leaving the response state machine\nunchanged.\n\nTested on Linux 6.12 with KASAN and a swtpm TPM2 device:\n\n - sequential partial reads returned the complete response\n - pread() and preadv() with offset 0x1400 returned -ESPIPE\n - pwrite() and pwritev() with offset zero returned -ESPIPE\n - the pending response remained intact after the rejected operations\n - a subsequent normal command/response cycle completed normally\n - no KASAN report was produced.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"tpm: Make the TPM character devices non-seekable","id":"CVE-2026-72135","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":8,"next":{"headline":"xfrm: xfrm_interface: require CAP_NET_ADMIN in the device netns for changelink","id":"CVE-2026-72136"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"spi: imx: reconfigure for PIO when DMA cannot be started","id":"CVE-2026-72134"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-08-15","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"no","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"total"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-10-16","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A local attacker can trigger out-of-bounds heap reads and writes in the Linux kernel TPM driver via positional I/O, potentially leaking memory or corrupting data.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-72135/"}
