An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-74628 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Linux. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-74628/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-74628/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-74628","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-74628/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-74628","record":{"aliases":["AZL-97077","BELL-CVE-2026-74628","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-74628","GHSA-fp3m-qh7p-hcj7","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-74628"],"analysis":{"component_type":"kernel","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["code_execution","denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"Linux kernel X.25","requires_auth":"none","summary":"A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's X.25 networking subsystem allows attackers to cause denial of service or potentially execute code via timer race conditions.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"use_after_free"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"Linux","cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":9.8,"severity":"critical","source":"cna","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[],"description":"In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:\n\nnet/x25: fix use-after-free of the socket by its timers\n\nThe x25 timers are armed with mod_timer() and cancelled with\ntimer_delete(), so a pending timer holds no reference on the socket and a\ncancel does not wait for a callback already running on another CPU.\n\nx25_heartbeat_expiry() also rearms unconditionally, so it can reinstall\nsk-\u003esk_timer after __x25_destroy_socket() has passed its cancel point.\nThe following __sock_put() frees the socket while the timer is still\nqueued, and the next expiry uses freed memory.  KASAN reports a\nslab-use-after-free on the kmalloc-2k object freed by close().\n\ntimer_delete_sync() cannot be used here: x25_heartbeat_expiry() and\nx25_timer_expiry() both reach the cancels from inside the timer they\nwould wait on, through __x25_destroy_socket() and x25_disconnect().\n\nArm the timers with sk_reset_timer() and cancel them with sk_stop_timer()\nso that an armed timer owns a reference, and release it in both expiry\nhandlers.  Rearm the heartbeat only while sk_hashed(sk) is still true,\nsince __x25_destroy_socket() unlinks the socket before dropping it.  Arm\nthe deferred destroy timer the same way and drop its reference in\nx25_destroy_timer().\n\nReproduced on net with KASAN, with the heartbeat period shortened so the\nwindow recurs.  With this patch the reproducer no longer triggers a\nreport and /proc/net/x25 drains.\n\nDiscovered by XBOW, triaged by Baul Lee \u003cbaul.lee@xbow.com\u003e","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"net/x25: fix use-after-free of the socket by its timers","id":"CVE-2026-74628","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":null,"products":[],"type":"use_after_free","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":8,"next":{"headline":"net/dibs: Correct freeing of dmb_clientid_arr","id":"CVE-2026-74629"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"net: devmem: prevent net-iov / page mixing","id":"CVE-2026-74627"},"products":["Linux"],"published":"2026-08-22","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-08-27","vendors":["Linux"]},"summary":"A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's X.25 networking subsystem allows attackers to cause denial of service or potentially execute code via timer race conditions.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-74628/"}
