An attacker can exploit it over the internet without logging in, with no action from the victim.\nExploitation: There is no known exploitation of CVE-2026-9076 in the wild and no public exploit code.\n\nAffected product: Openssl Openssl. No package-level version data is available, so check the vendor advisory linked from the reference page.\n\nTask:\n1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.\n3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.\n4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.\n5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-9076/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-9076/index.md)","id":"CVE-2026-9076","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-9076/index.md","name":"CVE-2026-9076","record":{"aliases":["ALPINE-CVE-2026-9076","AZL-89790","AZL-89873","AZL-89934","BELL-CVE-2026-9076","DEBIAN-CVE-2026-9076","GHSA-q98x-73c3-57gj","JLSEC-2026-1156","MINI-6334-6fm6-p3cv","MINI-vv3h-fjjg-2373","ROOT-OS-ALPINE-315-CVE-2026-9076","ROOT-OS-ALPINE-317-CVE-2026-9076","UBUNTU-CVE-2026-9076"],"analysis":{"component_type":"library","fix_type":"patch","impacts":["denial_of_service"],"network_reachable":"yes","non_default_config":false,"product_category":"OpenSSL cryptographic library","requires_auth":"none","summary":"An attacker can cause a denial of service in applications using OpenSSL CMS decryption by triggering a heap out-of-bounds read via crafted data.","user_interaction":"not_required","vuln_class":"memory_corruption"},"analysis_generated_by":"qwen3.8-flash-next","assigner":"openssl","cpe":[{"product":"openssl","vendor":"openssl"}],"cvss":{"score":7.5,"severity":"high","source":"cisa-adp","vector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H","version":"3.1"},"cwes":[{"id":"CWE-125","name":"Out-of-bounds Read"}],"description":"Issue summary: When CMS password-based decryption (RFC 3211 / PWRI key unwrap)\nprocesses attacker-supplied CMS data, an attacker-chosen stream-mode KEK\ncipher can trigger a heap out-of-bounds read in kek_unwrap_key().\n\nImpact summary: A heap buffer over-read may trigger a crash which leads to\nDenial of Service for an application if the input buffer ends at a memory\npage boundary and the following page is unmapped. There is no information\ndisclosure as the over-read bytes are not revealed to the attacker.\n\nThe key unwrapping function performs a check-byte test as specified in the\nRFC that reads 7 bytes from a heap allocation that is based on the wrapped\nkey length from the message. There is a minimum length check based on the\nblock length of the wrapping cipher. However the cipher is selected from\nan OID carried in the attacker's PWRI keyEncryptionAlgorithm with no\nrequirement that the cipher be a block cipher. When an attacker selects\na stream-mode cipher the guard will be ineffective and the allocated buffer\ncontaining the unwrapped key can be too small to fit the check-bytes\nspecified in the RFC and a buffer over-read can happen.\n\nApplications calling CMS_decrypt() or CMS_decrypt_set1_password()\n(equivalently openssl cms -decrypt -pwri_password ...) on untrusted CMS\ndata are vulnerable to this issue. No password knowledge is required: the\nover-read happens during the unwrap attempt before any authentication\nsucceeds.\n\nThe over-read is limited to a few bytes and is not written to output, so\nthere is no information disclosure. Triggering a crash requires the\nallocation to border unmapped memory, which is unlikely with the normal\nallocator.\n\nThe FIPS modules are not affected by this issue.","ecosystems":[],"exploits":{"exploitdb":0,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":0,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":0,"nuclei":0,"refs":[],"tier":"none_known"},"has_fix":true,"headline":"Out-of-Bounds Read in CMS Password-Based Decryption","id":"CVE-2026-9076","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"cve","links":{"ecosystem":null,"product":"openssl:openssl","products":["openssl:openssl"],"type":"memory_corruption","year":"2026"},"n_packages":0,"n_references":6,"next":{"headline":"Reliance on Untrusted Inputs in a Security Decision vulnerabilities in Model Context Protocol features","id":"CVE-2026-9077"},"packages":[],"prev":{"headline":"IBM API Connect SQL Injection","id":"CVE-2026-9074"},"products":["OpenSSL"],"published":"2026-06-09","related":[{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Null dereference in n/a","id":"CVE-2009-3245","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2010-03-05"},{"cvss_score":10,"headline":"Memory corruption in n/a","id":"CVE-2006-3738","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2006-09-28"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Untrusted Sender DN Used as Format String in CMP Response Validation","id":"CVE-2026-63073","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2026-08-25"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Use after free in n/a","id":"CVE-2016-6309","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2016-09-26"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Integer overflow in n/a","id":"CVE-2016-0799","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2016-03-03"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Memory corruption in n/a","id":"CVE-2016-2842","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2016-03-03"},{"cvss_score":9.8,"headline":"Memory corruption in n/a","id":"CVE-2003-0545","kev_date_added":null,"published":"2003-10-01"}],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"CVE Terms of Use (MITRE)","name":"CVE List","prefix":"CVE"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"US public information, NVD API terms","name":"NVD"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"CWE Terms of Use","name":"CWE (MITRE)"},{"class":"attribution","licence":"FIRST CVSS licence","name":"CVSS (FIRST)"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":"yes","exploitation":"none","technical_impact":"partial"},"state":"PUBLISHED","updated":"2026-06-10","vendors":["OpenSSL"]},"summary":"An attacker can cause a denial of service in applications using OpenSSL CMS decryption by triggering a heap out-of-bounds read via crafted data.","url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/CVE-2026-9076/"}
