## What is CVE-2026-96640?

CVE-2026-96640 is a high-severity vulnerability in Python Pillow, published on 21 Oct 2026.

### Official description

Pillow is a Python imaging library. From 5.1.0 until 13.0.0, PdfParser.linearize_page_tree() in src/PIL/PdfParser.py treats a PDF /Pages graph as a tree without tracking duplicate indirect references. When Image.save(..., format="PDF", append=True) processes an attacker-controlled existing PDF whose /Kids arrays repeatedly reference the same child /Pages node, Pillow expands the shared subtree as distinct pages. A compact malformed PDF can therefore create exponentially many page references and consume disproportionate CPU before the append completes. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

Weakness: CWE-407 (Inefficient Algorithmic Complexity), CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption)

## Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-96640?

## Fix prompt for AI coding agents

```text
Check this codebase for CVE-2026-96640 and fix it if it is affected.
What it is: CVE-2026-96640 is a high-severity vulnerability in Python Pillow, published on 21 Oct 2026.
Exploitation: It is not confirmed as exploited in the wild, but public exploit code for CVE-2026-96640 exists.
Affected packages and fixed versions:
- pillow (Bitnami): affected from 5.1.0; fixed in 13.0.0
- pillow (PyPI): affected from 5.1.0; fixed in 13.0.0
- Pillow (PyPI): affected from 5.1.0; fixed in 13.0.0
Task:
1. Search the dependency manifests and lockfiles (for example package.json, package-lock.json, requirements.txt, poetry.lock, uv.lock, pom.xml, build.gradle, go.mod, Cargo.lock, Gemfile.lock) and any Dockerfiles for the affected packages, including transitive dependencies.
2. If an affected version is in use, upgrade it to the fixed version for its release line with the project's package manager, so the lockfile is regenerated. Prefer the smallest upgrade that fixes it.
3. If there is no fix, or the upgrade would break the build, do not guess: explain the risk and the safest workaround instead.
4. Run the tests and summarise what changed and why.
5. If nothing in the project is affected, say so and change nothing.
