What is CVE-2026-98140?
CVE-2026-98140 is a medium-severity denial of service vulnerability in Linux kernel, published on 25 Sep 2026. It can only be exploited from the same machine or local network, with no action from the victim.
Official description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
ntfs: fix kmap_local leak in write_mft_record_nolock() error paths
write_mft_record_nolock() maps the MFT record folio with kmap_local_folio(), but the pre_write_mst_fixup() and bio_add_folio() failure paths jump to the error label without unmapping it. kmap_local mappings are stack-ordered per task, so leaking one corrupts the nesting for any outer mapping.
Unmap the folio on those error paths too.
Weakness: CWE-401
Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-98140?
It affects 1 product.
Products include Linux kernel.
How do I fix CVE-2026-98140?
Apply the vendor's patch.
Upgrade, then put limits on request size, rate and nesting depth so one client cannot exhaust the service. More about Denial of service.
Is CVE-2026-98140 being exploited?
