Every version was published to cause harm.\n\nTask:\n1. Search this repository's dependency manifests and lockfiles for the package, including transitive dependencies.\n2. If it is present, remove it, regenerate the lockfile with the project's package manager, and replace whatever it was used for.\n3. List any CI runners, developer machines or containers that installed it, so their secrets can be rotated.\n4. If the package is not used anywhere, say so and change nothing.\n\nReference: https://insights.sbomify.com/MAL-2026-10409/ (Markdown: https://insights.sbomify.com/MAL-2026-10409/index.md)","id":"MAL-2026-10409","markdown":"https://insights.sbomify.com/MAL-2026-10409/index.md","name":"MAL-2026-10409","record":{"aliases":["GHSA-w47c-q2p5-gq33"],"analysis":null,"analysis_generated_by":null,"assigner":null,"cpe":[],"cvss":{"score":null,"severity":null,"source":null,"vector":null,"version":null},"cwes":[],"description":"The package presents itself as a debugging utility but its exported API is a browser credential stealer targeting installer-owned secrets. The `extract(browserPath, outputPath)` entry point spawns Chrome/Edge/Brave under a debugger, locates the OSCrypt App-Bound Encryption provider inside chrome.dll/msedge.dll via Zydis disassembly (searching for the `OSCrypt.AppBoundProvider.Decrypt.ResultCode` string), sets a hardware execute breakpoint, and reads the 32-byte AppBound key out of process registers via ReadProcessMemory. It then DPAPI-decrypts the Local State master key and issues `SELECT... encrypted_value FROM cookies` and `SELECT origin_url, username_value, password_value FROM logins` against every Chrome/Edge/Brave profile, AES-GCM-decrypting cookies, saved passwords, autofill and history. A second entry point `extractGecko(outputPath)` loads nss3.dll from installed Firefox, Thunderbird, Waterfox, SeaMonkey, Pale Moon, LibreWolf and Tor Browser and calls PK11SDR_Decrypt to recover saved passwords from logins.json, then copies cookies.sqlite, formhistory.sqlite and places.sqlite from each profile. Output files are delimited with a `\u003cSage Private\u003e` branding string consistent with offensive tooling. binding.gyp references vcpkg paths outside the tarball (`\u003c(module_root_dir)\\..\\builder\\src\\Chromium-DebugElevator-main (1)\\...`), so `node-gyp rebuild` will fail on a normal install — the stealer is distributed as C++ source and runs only after a consumer builds it manually and invokes the API, but the shipped code has no purpose other than harvesting browser secrets from the machine that runs it.\n\nAny computer that has this package installed or running should be considered fully compromised. All secrets and keys stored on that computer should be rotated immediately from a different computer. The package should be removed, but as full control of the computer may have been given to an outside entity, there is no guarantee that removing the package will remove all malicious software resulting from installing it.","ecosystems":["npm"],"exploits":{"exploitdb":null,"first_seen":null,"github_poc":null,"max_poc_stars":null,"metasploit":null,"nuclei":null,"refs":[],"tier":null},"has_fix":false,"headline":"Malicious code in cold-debug-elevator (npm)","id":"MAL-2026-10409","indexable":true,"kev":null,"kind":"malicious","links":{"ecosystem":"npm","product":null,"products":[],"type":null,"year":"2026"},"n_packages":1,"n_references":null,"packages":[{"ecosystem":"npm","fixed":[],"introduced":["0"],"last_affected":[],"package":"cold-debug-elevator","purl":"pkg:npm/cold-debug-elevator","source":"MAL-2026-10409"}],"products":null,"published":"2026-07-13","related":[],"sources":[{"class":"attribution","licence":"Apache-2.0","name":"OpenSSF Malicious Packages","prefix":"MAL"}],"ssvc":{"automatable":null,"exploitation":null,"technical_impact":null},"state":null,"updated":null,"vendors":null},"summary":null,"url":"https://insights.sbomify.com/MAL-2026-10409/"}
