What is MAL-2026-12011?

MAL-2026-12011 is a malicious package in @keyv/compress-lz4, published on 4 Aug 2026.

Official description

Package is an LZ4 compression adapter for the keyv key-value store. The dist bundles (dist/index.cjs and dist/index.mjs) contain Buffer.from(…, 'base64')/.toString() calls, which is the expected shape for a compression/serialization codec that encodes and decodes binary payloads. No lifecycle scripts fetching remote content, no environment-variable or credential-path reads, no network exfiltration destinations, and no eval/exec of decoded content are present. The pattern-match on Buffer.from + base64 alone does not indicate installer-side harm.

Any computer that has this package installed or running should be considered fully compromised. All secrets and keys stored on that computer should be rotated immediately from a different computer. The package should be removed, but as full control of the computer may have been given to an outside entity, there is no guarantee that removing the package will remove all malicious software resulting from installing it.

What should I do about MAL-2026-12011?

Remove the package from your dependencies and lockfiles, then rotate any secrets on machines where it was installed.
