What is MAL-2026-5252?

MAL-2026-5252 is a malicious package in executable-stories-formatters, published on 5 Jun 2026.

Official description

No concrete installer-harm indicators were identified in this version of the package. No lifecycle hooks, hardcoded network destinations, credential reads, or known dropper fingerprints surfaced during review. Coverage of the package contents was partial, so a human reviewer should confirm before granting full trust.

The Miasma malware is a self-propagating worm that spreads across the npm registry by abusing weaponized binding.gyp files to achieve execution during package installation, bypassing security tools that only inspect package lifecycle scripts. Upon execution, the malware attempts to exfiltrate credentials and OIDC tokens for various cloud and registry services, and propagates by compromising other packages managed by the stolen accounts or committing backdoor files to GitHub repositories.

What should I do about MAL-2026-5252?

Remove the package from your dependencies and lockfiles, then rotate any secrets on machines where it was installed.
